Silvernest Community Guidelines

At Silvernest, we really want you to feel at home. In fact, that’s kind of our whole thing and why we built a housemate matching algorithm. But technology can only do so much in creating a community, and it’s up to us to make this website secure and comfortable.

Our welcome mat is rolled out for everyone who wants to be here, and we hope you make yourself comfortable and stay a while. As long as you keep these guidelines in mind when using our platform, we think you’ll love being a part of our vibrant and growing community.

Be yourself!

Be enthusiastic, make jokes, share your favorite recipe, talk about that book you just read—share whatever feels true to you! Being your authentic self will add some liveliness to your messages and help your profile to get noticed.

Be yourself—literally

We also mean this literally. Your profile should be made by and for you (or by a friend/family member with your permission). Do not impersonate any other person or entity or generally misrepresent who you are.

If you’re on Silvernest, you’re here for homesharing. Don’t use this platform to drive people to external websites or for promotions and solicitations (including but not limited to your event, business, non-profit, political campaign or contest).

It’s all in the details

Finding the right fit starts by sharing the right information. Make sure to let your matches know of any special needs or requirements you have early in your conversations. Even if it takes a little extra time to find a housemate, transparency is the best way to ensure compatibility and success.

There’s no place like home

It’s true that there’s no place like home, and there’s especially no place like your home. To ensure there are no surprises on move-in day, use only accurate, real photos and specify only real, up-to-date amenities in your listing. Don’t be afraid to disclose any quirks that might be pertinent to your housemate—every home has them! It’s much better to be up-front about your neighbor’s rooster or the backyard train tracks than to let them surprise a new housemate.

Remember you’re talking to a person

When staring at a screen, it can be easy to forget that what we say doesn’t just go into cyberspace. When you message other people, interact like you would face-to-face. If you wouldn’t say it to someone you just met in person, don’t say it online. This includes sending any illegal, violent or sexually explicit content.

No hate speech

Our community’s diversity is what makes it so special. We have a zero-tolerance policy for racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, ageism and any other forms of discrimination. Of course, everyone has preferences when searching for the right housemate, and we’ve built our algorithm to allow for that. However, our goal is for our community to be as inclusive and open as possible. Stereotypes or generalizations attributed to all members of a group breed discrimination. Learning about the unfamiliar is an effective antidote.

Keep it real

We have a zero-tolerance policy for attempting to be dishonest, scam or defraud users. Learn more about staying safe online in Avoiding Scams and Keeping Your Information Secure.

18 and older

Our website has facilitated some pretty cool intergenerational homesharing arrangements. However, you must be 18 years or older to create a Silvernest profile or listing.

Prevent snapshot snafus

We love your kids and grandkids. Just remember if you post a photo of them to your profile, you must also be in that picture. We do not allow photos of unaccompanied minors on our site.

It takes a village
